DALGONA COFFEE

Dalgona Coffee

Jumping on the Dalgona Coffee band wagon! This whipped coffee has popped up everywhere on social media.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a beverage made by whipping equal proportions of instant coffee powder, sugar and hot water until it becomes creamy. Then add it to cold or hot milk. Occasionally, it is topped with coffee powder, cocoa, crumbled biscuits or honey.

The viral trend of sharing recipes and photos of the DIY coffee first gained prominence during the social distancing orders in South Korea. For that reason, has been dubbed the ‘quarantine drink’ or ‘quarantine coffee’.

What does Dalgona Coffee taste like?

I say creamy milk coffee without adding cream, if that makes sense. I used 1 tablespoon of my favorite Starbucks instant coffee, 1 tablespoon of organic cane sugar and 1 tablespoon of hot water. Whip it with my electric hand mixer in a clean glass bowl. After 3-4 minutes, it became thick and creamy. You can whisk it by hand if you don’t have an electric hand mixer, it might take longer though and pretty sure you’ll get a good arm workout. Then, scoop the creamy whipped coffee over hot or cold milk with some ice cubes. I used 1 cup soy milk, but of course, you can use any milk you like. This recipe made two servings for us, but if you want stronger coffee, double up the coffee mixture.

It’s rich and creamy and not overly sweet, which is perfect for me, but if you like sweeter coffee, add more sweetener before serving.

And you know what… I’m thinking it would be awesome to add cinnamon or caramel on top to jazz it up. Hey, I might try that next time!
